Nationally Strategic Infrastructure Project


What is the Redmere Wind Farm?

Vattenfall has announced plans to develop two new onshore wind farms in West Suffolk, West Norfolk and East Cambridgeshire, with one near the Suffolk border. Together they would produce enough electricity to power more than 320,000 homes per year.


The wind farms: If approved, Redmere Wind Farm, near Shippea Hill, could generate up to 303MW. While Chatteris Wind Farm, to the south of Chatteris, could generate up to 126MW. Combined, the two sites could generate enough electricity to power up to 321,369 homes per year. Each project will have a separate planning application. 

Redmere is the more relevant wind farm for Suffolk councils and communities.

Vattenfall is introducing the projects together because some local communities and representatives may have an interest in both.

The developer will deliver at least a 10% biodiversity net gain during the lifetime of the wind farms. This commitment will be developed in more detail once environmental studies have been completed. The sites are also expected to create new jobs, support the local supply chain and contribute to the economy through business rates alongside community benefit funding.

Councila nd communities are welcome to participate in the early consultation. 

Feedback forms will be available at the drop-in events - see below - and also on Vattenfall's project website from Tuesday 13th October. All early feedback from local residents should be submitted in writing by Monday 9th November.

The consultation events schedule:

  • Tuesday 13th October, 4pm to 8pm, at Feltwell Royal British Legion Hall, Long Lane, Feltwell
  • Wednesday 14th October, 4pm to 8pm, at Mepal Village Hall, School Lane, Mepal
  • Thursday 15th October, 4pm to 8pm, at Littleport Leisure Community Centre, Camel Road, Littleport.

More opportunities to engage with the developer will be available in 2027.


Below is some general guidance for councils for preparing for consultations. As small councils are statutory consultees, the developer is legally obliged to engage with you as relevant councils. Being proactive will help you engage with communities and help shape the proposed project. 

  • Sign up for updates on Vattenfall's or PINS websites – you will be told when consultations are planning to begin.

  • Set up a small working group of councillors and volunteers to spread the workload which is likely to be generated by the proposed scheme.

  • Gather concerns, local knowledge and ideas ahead of consultation – consider matters including the highways, ecology, health and community funding. 

  • Use all available routes to the community – digital, printed, broadcast and community networks – to reach residents who do not usually engage.

  • Translate technical documents into clear, plain‑English summaries and quick guides – work with county and district councils if needed. SALC is also available to provide support. 

  • Offer a range of engagement activities, e.g. drop‑ins, comment boxes and informal group and one-to-one conversations. 

  • Signpost community members to the developers’ events and website.

  • Collaborate with third parties to engage with people who do not usually participate, e.g. charities, businesses, places of worship.

  • Create a resident mailing list if you have not already done so.

  • Encourage ongoing involvement among your community - you need to make the most of the opportunity to ensure you are influencing the project's design.
