What is Sizewell C?
Sizewell C nuclear power station will be a 3,200 MWe nuclear power station with two EPRs (European Pressurised Water Reactors). The Government is the majority shareholder, with others in the consortium being EDF, Centrica, La Caisse and Amber Infrastructure. The estimated £40bn construction is expected to last between nine and 12 years, with the power station becoming operational in mid-late 2030s.
-
The power station will generate up to 7% of the country’s electricity demand, delivering to six million homes.
-
It will bring £4bn to the regional economy.
-
It is expected to support 70,000 jobs nationally, including 7,900 jobs in Suffolk and 1,500 apprenticeships throughout the project’s life cycle.
-
2,000 workers are on site daily (from January 2026).
-
Once operational, there will be 750 jobs onsite.
-
Over £1bn in contracts have already been awarded to businesses across the East of England.
-
Based on Hinkley Point C in Somerset, Sizewell C is expected to cost 20% less to build.
-
A new FE College, Apprentice Hub and Construction Skills centre will be built on site.A 2,400-bed temporary accommodation campus is being built for the construction period. Holiday accommodation in Pakefield and Darsham will also house workers during the construction period and will provide a legacy benefit for communities following construction.
Sizewell C has received development consent from the UK Government and is now in the early construction phase. Enabling works are already underway to prepare the site, including land preparation, infrastructure upgrades and environmental mitigation. At the same time, the project continues to progress through detailed design, procurement, and contractor mobilisation, with a strong focus on meeting regulatory requirements and environmental commitments.

Although the Secretary of State has granted consent for Sizewell C, East Suffolk Council and Suffolk County Council are still dealing with planning applications and providing permission for projects related to the development, e.g. road schemes, which people can comment on.

Community Forums & Local Information
Sizewell C’s Deed of Obligation (DoO) is the largest Section 106 Agreement in English Planning history, and is providing £200m+ of funding to mitigate the impact of the project on the local community, landscape and economy, and to provide legacy benefits for East Suffolk residents.
The DoO is a legally binding contract signed between Sizewell C, East Suffolk Council and Suffolk County Council. It secures mitigation measures, community benefits, and financial contributions from the developer to local authorities.
Because NSIPs follow a separate planning regime under the Planning Act 2008 to more typical planning applications, being granted a Development Consent Order (DCO) by the relevant Secretary of State, the DoO is essential for ensuring the developer adheres to agreed commitments during construction, operation and decommissioning.
